BVB: Terzic predicts Hummel’s “great chance” of participating in the World Cup

BVB defender “in really good shape”

Borussia Dortmund’s head coach Edin Terzic expects Mats Hummels to make a national team comeback for the World Cup in Qatar. “I’m sure that if Mats keeps playing like this, he has a great chance of being part of the World Cup,” Terzic said at a press conference on Thursday. “But that’s not my decision. My decision on the defender position is difficult enough. Everything else will be decided by Hansi Flick.”

Before the season, BVB brought in national team players Nico Schlotterbeck (22, for 20 million euros) from SC Freiburg and Niklas Süle (27, free transfer) from FC Bayern Munich for central defence. Nevertheless, the 33-year-old Hummels has retained his regular place so far. “Like all our central defenders, Mats is in really good shape,” said Terzic.

Hummels himself recently stated that he was in a “regular” exchange with national coach Flick. Of the “Bild” newspaper According to the national coach, who recently saw a shaky defense against Hungary and England, the veteran’s commitment to take back a possible role as a backup at the World Cup. The defender, who is currently in good form, played his 76th and last international match at the European Championships in June 2021.

BVB: Reus injury “not as bad as initially feared”

Terzic also provided information about the condition of the injured Marco Reus. Accordingly, the 33-year-old captain should return to training shortly. “It’s not as bad for Marco as we feared at the beginning. We hope that he can return to team training next week so that he can be rebuilt from next week and be available again for the upcoming tasks,” said the coach. Even a Champions League mission next Wednesday at FC Sevilla is conceivable.

The 33-year-old injured his foot almost two weeks ago in the 1-0 win in the Revierderby against FC Schalke. At first, a serious injury and the end of the World Cup were feared. A good ten days ago, sports director Sebastian Kehl had forecast downtime of “three to four weeks”. According to Terzic, Reus should now be back much faster.

The game on Saturday at 1. FC Köln is still too early for Reus. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel (24) and Giovanni Reyna (19) will also be absent. The US international was injured in the international match against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. “It’s a strain. He will be out for seven to ten days,” reported Terzic. “We hope that he’ll be available again after the Sevilla game.” Reyna’s injuries kept throwing him back, which is why he only played 647 minutes in 13 games last season. Overall, BVB currently has no players worth 95.5 million euros.
