Elias Benkara from the Dortmund U23 wants to play for the Algerian national team in the future. Transfermarkt can confirm corresponding reports from his father’s home country. The 18-year-old central defender decided to take the step last August after discussions with the association’s board.

For Germany, Benkara played once for the U15 and twice for the U17. Now the 1.93 tall BVB youth defender is setting his sights on taking part in the World Cup. Algeria has already qualified for next year’s tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada. His international debut could come in the Algerians’ friendly internationals against Saudi Arabia and Zimbabwe in November.

Algeria is once again able to secure a young player trained in Germany at an early stage. Last year, former Hertha player Ibrahim Maza (19) also decided to join the North African country’s association. In the summer, Maza moved to the Bundesliga and is under contract with Bayer Leverkusen. He has now appeared six times for Algeria
