BVB stumbles, VfB wins – liberation for Union and Mainz

On Saturday, fans in the Bundesliga stadiums again caused numerous interruptions. VfB still won, while BVB stumbled.

VfB Stuttgart remains the surprise team of the season in the Bundesliga. The Swabians won 2-1 (1-0) against newly promoted Darmstadt and thus defended third place in the table. The goals were scored by striker Serhou Guirassy (14th minute) and new signing Mahmoud Dahoud (90th + 2). Aaron Seydel scored for Darmstadt (90+5). After a yellow-red card for Pascal Stenzel, VfB was outnumbered for an entire half.

Borussia Dortmund remains Stuttgart’s first pursuer in the table. In the away game in Wolfsburg, however, BVB couldn’t get past a 1-1 (0-1) draw. National player Niclas Füllkrug took the lead early on (8th). VfL professional Yannick Gerhardt equalized in the second half (64′). BVB is now five points behind VfB, but remains unbeaten this year.

Union Berlin breathes a sigh of relief in the relegation battle. The capital city club surprisingly won at TSG Hoffenheim. Brenden Aaronson scored the celebrated winning goal a few minutes before the final whistle (84th). In the first half, Hoffenheim’s Stanley Nsoki and Union’s Kevin Volland were sent off with red cards (45th+3/45th+6).

1. FSV Mainz 05 also scored a breakthrough under their new coach Bo Henriksen. Sepp van den Berg shot the home team to a hugely important 1-0 win against FC Augsburg (44th). FCA defender Pedersen was sent off with a red card in stoppage time after a serious foul (90th + 12th).

All games were once again delayed by numerous interruptions. As in previous weeks, fans threw tennis balls onto the field in protest against an investor’s entry into the Bundesliga. In Darmstadt, for example, this resulted in injury time of 20 minutes in the first half.
