Borussia Dortmund prevented a nasty slip-up at the last second.

The second-placed team scored a 3-2 win against FC St. Pauli at the start of the second half of the Bundesliga thanks to a late penalty goal in front of Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In the table, BVB reduced the gap to leaders FC Bayern Munich to eight points before their top game this evening at RB Leipzig (6.30 p.m.).

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim continued their positive trend with a 1-0 win against former champions Bayer Leverkusen and initially moved up to third place. In the fight against relegation, 1. FC Köln celebrated an immensely important 2-1 win against FV Mainz 05. 1. FC Heidenheim played 1-1 at VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV drew 0-0 at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach. At the start of the 18th matchday, Eintracht Frankfurt played 3-3 at Werder Bremen.

Borussia Dortmund – FC St. Pauli 3:2 (1:0)

Leading 2-0 – but almost didn’t win against the new bottom team. It took Borussia a long time to take the lead against St. Pauli. Julian Brandt only scored BVB’s goal in the first minute of stoppage time in the first half. Up to that point, the Westphalians’ performance had not been particularly convincing against their guests from FC St. Pauli, who had never won in Dortmund.

After the break, Karim Adeyemi (54th) increased for the hosts, but St. Pauli did not admit defeat: James Sands (62nd) scored the next goal, Ricky-Jade Jones even equalized (72nd). With a penalty in added time, Emre Can made BVB’s victory perfect.

VfL Wolfsburg – 1. FC Heidenheim 1:1 (0:1)

In Wolfsburg, too, the first goal came in the first minute of stoppage time – but for the guests, which meant that Dortmund’s opponent St. Pauli was no longer bottom of the table, rather than Heidenheim. Adrian Beck celebrated Heidenheim’s goal in a duel between the two worst defensive lines in the Bundesliga. But Wolfsburg equalized through Moritz Jenz (80th). Heidenheim moved up to 16th place.

TSG Hoffenheim – Bayer Leverkusen 1:0 (1:0)

Hoffenheim remains in top form – Leverkusen is away from the same. The former champions’ reaction to the 4-1 defeat at the start of the year against VfB Stuttgart was nothing. After the cancellation of the HSV game during the week, there were now no points. With a remarkable free kick goal, Wouter Burger made it 1-0 for TSG in the ninth minute, who continued to play strongly and ultimately won against the Werkself in Sinsheim for the first time in almost six years.

1. FC Cologne – FSV Mainz 05 2:1 (0:1)

The Mainz team suffered their first defeat under their new coach Urs Fischer – much to the delight of colleague Lukas Kwasniok. His Cologne team managed their first win after eight games. In the 29th minute, Stefan Bell scored for Mainz, and there were whistles for Cologne at halftime. But then: Ragnar Ache (57th) equalized and also secured the win (85th). Mainz slipped to last place.

Hamburger SV – Borussia Mönchengladbach 0-0

Lots of ball possession, significantly more chances, but no goal: After the actual home opener against Leverkusen was canceled, HSV couldn’t get past a zero score in the first game of the new year in front of their home crowd. Against Borussia – who had previously lost 1:5 to Hoffenheim – only the redeeming goal was missing for Hamburg.
