Borussia Dortmund (BVB) secured early Champions League qualification for the eleventh time in a row in the 1,000th Bundesliga home game in club history against desolate SC Freiburg.
After two defeats in a row, BVB easily dispatched Breisgauer 4-0 (3-0) at the end of the 31st matchday. At the same time it was the 600th home win in the Bundesliga for the Westphalia team.
In the remaining three games of the season, coach Niko Kovac’s team will now have to secure the runner-up spot. After 31 games, Dortmund are five points ahead of RB Leipzig. Freiburg fell back to eighth place with 43 points behind Eintracht Frankfurt.
Freiburg coach Schuster rotates in seven positions
Between the semi-final exit in the DFB Cup at VfB Stuttgart and the semi-final first leg in the Europa League at Sporting Braga, the guests also lacked any bite. All three goals before the break by Maximilian Beier (8th minute), Serhou Guirassy (14th) and Ramy Bensebaini (32nd) resulted from severe individual defensive errors. Substitute Fabio Silva (87th) scored the final score shortly before the end.
Freiburg’s coach Julian Schuster had rotated in seven positions. This had never happened before under his aegis. Johan Manzambi and Matthias Ginter weren’t even in the squad after the intense cup fight in Stuttgart.
Once again the sports club went under in Dortmund. From the last six away games with the Black and Yellows, Freiburg did not manage to score a point, conceding 25 goals. This time too, BVB took advantage of the sometimes grotesque defensive blunders. Derry Scherhant made a mistake when conceding the first goal, so that the nimble winger Beier sprinted past a steep Bensebaini pass without any problems and safely used it.
BVB gratefully accepts gifts from Freiburg
Just six minutes later, Ifechukwu Ogbus was asleep so that Guirassy was able to tip a well-considered and delicate pass from Julian Brandt into the net. Bensebaini’s header goal from a corner from Julian Ryerson was the early decision. This time Igor Matanovic wasn’t paying attention. For Ryerson, it was the ninth corner this season that resulted in a goal – a league record.
After the change, Dortmund didn’t do more than necessary and managed to make it 3-0. Apart from a goal that was disallowed for offside, there wasn’t much more to come from Freiburg. Given the score, Dortmund no longer played as consistently and decisively as they had before the break.
The game was just babbling along – until the 87th minute: Then Fabio Silva, who had been substituted just three minutes earlier, scored to make it 4-0 after an assist from Daniel Svensson, who had also recently arrived, and gave the BVB fans another reason to celebrate at the end.
