Borussia Dortmund’s turbulent days continue.
With a 1-1 (1-0) draw at SC Freiburg, BVB missed the hoped-for reaction to the latest embarrassment in the Champions League and also the possible jump to second place in the Bundesliga.
Ramy Bensebaini scored in the 31st minute for BVB, who missed out on their eighth competitive win in a row against favorite opponents Freiburg in the final phase. After a red card against Jobe Bellingham for an emergency stop (53′), Dortmund had to play outnumbered for a long time, with Freiburg’s Lucas Höler scoring beautifully to make it 1-1 a quarter of an hour before the end.
The embarrassing 2-2 draw against the Norwegian underdog FK Bodö/Glimt in the premier class and defense chief Nico Schlotterbeck’s public criticism of his teammates caused unrest at BVB during the week. The draw in Breisgau is unlikely to help the eight-time champion and coach Niko Kovac’s mood improve before Borussia’s explosive duel with Mönchengladbach next Friday.
Couto is really pumping up steam
Dortmund, who were missing the ailing Waldemar Anton, Julian Brandt and Aaron Anselmino, among others, started courageously and had more of the game in the first half. Yan Couto in particular kept pushing down the right side and with his crosses he was particularly looking for striker Serhou Guirassy, who this time formed a double front with Fabio Silva. In the tenth minute, Couto showed a bit too much effort, pushed his opponent Johan Manzambi over the advertising board and was shown a yellow card.
Guirassy missed BVB’s first chances with his head in the 5th and 17th minutes. Then Guinea’s national striker showed a fine combination with Carney Chukwuemeka, at the end of which the Englishman only hit the left post (21′). Another high cross from Couto, this time from a free kick, made it 1-0 for the visitors. Bensebaini sank the ball from close range into the Freiburg goal and rewarded BVB for the good first half hour.
The sports club, which was missing the ailing Philipp Lienhart and Niklas Beste due to an infection, was offensively harmless for a long time in front of 34,700 spectators. In the final phase of the first half he had two good chances through Yuito Suzuki (39th) and captain Christian Günter (45th).
Red card changes the game
The second half had barely begun when Dortmund weakened themselves. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel played a far too risky pass to Bellingham, who fouled Philipp Treu and had to leave the field with a red card. Freiburg’s Günter circled the free kick low to the left of the goal (55th).
BVB coach Kovac reacted, brought on Pascal Groß for Silva and tried to strengthen his defense, which was now of course increasingly challenged. It was a completely different game than in the first half; Freiburg had the majority and had much more control over the ball and pressure. Kobel parried against Treu (69′) and directed a shot from Suzuki onto the crossbar (73′). However, he was powerless when it came to Höler’s remarkable side kick, and the ball flew from the inside post into the net.
In the final phase, Dortmund was even lucky when a goal from Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic (86th) was not counted due to an offside position.
