Sports director Sebastian Kehl had already emphasized last week that Borussia Dortmund thinks highly of Felix Nmecha and would like to extend the midfielder’s contract, which runs until 2028. As “Sport Bild” reports, the first discussions have now taken place between the Bundesliga club and his protégé. If he signs a new working paper with Westphalia, the 25-year-old will receive a hefty salary increase and become a top earner. At the same time, Nmecha’s advisor made it clear what importance BVB has for his client.
Borussia made it clear in the negotiations that they were willing to significantly increase Nmecha’s salary as part of an extension, the magazine reports. The native of Hamburg with English roots currently earns an estimated five million euros per year; a signature could lift him to the internal top level of around seven to eight million euros, it is said. Nmecha moved from VfL Wolfsburg to the Black and Yellows in 2023 for a fee of 30 million euros and has tripled his market value since then. In the current Bundesliga season, he was in coach Niko Kovac’s starting line-up in 20 of 23 appearances and has scored five goals to date.
It’s no secret that Nmecha is basically toying with a move to the Premier League. However, Borussia is currently the priority, emphasized his agent Tobi Alabi in “Sport Bild”: “Felix still has two years left on his contract and we fully respect that. Borussia Dortmund has played an important role in his development and he is grateful for the trust and platform that the club has given him.”
Nmecha is now the most valuable central midfielder with a German passport. In an international comparison, he is in the top 20. “The player develops from season to season and when a player performs well, there is of course always interest and questions about the future. That is part of top-class football and reflects the progress he has made. At the moment the focus is very clear: Felix is determined to give everything for Borussia Dortmund, to fight for the club and to help the team achieve its goals. In due course, all discussions about the future will always be conducted respectfully and together with the club,” Alabi continued.
There are exciting weeks and months ahead in Dortmund, because the five most valuable players, which also include Karim Adeyemi and Gregor Kobel, have contracts that expire in 2027 or 2028, while the longest-serving Borussia player, Julian Brandt, can move on for free next summer. With regard to Nmecha, Kehl recently praised: “He creates new spaces and creates outnumbered situations. Felix is doing a lot at the moment and is an incredibly important player.”
