With an average of 81,312 spectators, BVB was the biggest Bundesliga fan magnet last year; only FC Barcelona in the world attracted more people to the Camp Nou. Nevertheless, the black and yellow are not among the 20 clubs with the highest audience revenue in Europe. This comes from that UEFA financial report and has several reasons.

The report includes match day income, among other things, season and day tickets, catering or so-called hospitality offers. The fact that the Dortmund team does not appear in the top 20 is primarily due to the low prices. On average, a stadium visitor paid BVB 26 euros for a game, 49th place internationally. A stark counter-example: PSG attracted an average of 46,417 people to the Parc des Princes in 2023, but was by far in first place in terms of average price due to numerous premium offers at 140 euros per fan. The French collected 6.6 million euros per home game (second place), while BVB only received 2.1 million euros (17th place).

The fact that BVB still doesn’t make it into the top 20 in the revenue ranking is also due to the number of games. There are more duels in the 20-team Premier League, Serie A and LaLiga, but the Scottish clubs Celtic Glasgow (€1.9 million per home game) and Glasgow Rangers (€1.8 million) are also ahead thanks to more league games , two cups and the European Cup ahead of Borussia.

Seven clubs reported spectator revenue of more than 100 million euros in 2023, with Liverpool FC set to rejoin this group in 2024 following its stadium expansion. The total of the 20 clubs with the highest audience revenue rose by a whopping 32 percent last year. FC Bayern is the only Bundesliga club in the top 20 and has increased significantly at 78 percent.

The Munich team’s income rose from 68 million to 121 million euros, meaning the German record champions climbed three places to sixth place. Bayern earned a good 3 million euros more per home game than BVB. From a German perspective, Eintracht Frankfurt (1.9 million euros per home game), RB Leipzig (1.5 million euros), VfB Stuttgart (1.4 million euros) and SC Freiburg (1.1 million euros) follow. . Barça received the most spectator revenue in 2023 with 190 million euros, the Catalans pushed PSG out of the top spot with an 80 million plus (153 million euros) and also made up three places.

BVB and FC Bayern in the top 20 for revenue from jerseys and merchandising

Barcelona is also at the top of the rankings when it comes to revenue from jersey sales and merchandising. Coach Xavi’s team also increased the most here, jumping by 60 million to 179 million euros. FC Bayern remains in third place and increased from 128 million to 147 million euros. With BVB and Eintracht there are two other Bundesliga clubs in the top 20. The Dortmund team recorded a small increase in twelfth place to 54 million euros, the Frankfurt team made it to 19th place with 26 million euros.
