The long-time world-class defender gets his big farewell to the signal Iduna Park-and Dortmund still has a specially for the 36-year-old.

Special honor for Mats Hummels: The 2014 world champion will be officially adopted at the Borussia Dortmund season opening ceremony on Sunday-and again in the BVB jersey. The central defender, who ended his career in summer, will start when playing against Juventus Turin for BVB.

“You literally noticed the joy of the process. That is why he also plays from the beginning. Because he would like to run in with the team,” said Dortmund Managing Director Carsten Cramer in an interview with Sport1 and Sky.

So far, there was no opportunity to say goodbye to Hummels in Dortmund. This is now made up for, BVB also sells a special jersey to Hummels’ honor. The 36-year-old had played for BVB from 2008 to 2016 and from 2019 to 2024. He spent his last season as a professional at AS Rome.

Hummels finished five times (twice with Dortmund, three times with FC Bayern) and also won the DFB Cup three times three times with Dortmund, once with Bavaria). In 2009 he became a U21 European champion, and in 2014 he triumphed in Maracana with the German national team in the World Cup final against Argentina.
