Nico Schlotterbeck is the undisputed leader of Borussia Dortmund’s defense, a player who could have a significant impact on BVB’s fortunes in the coming years – and is very popular with the competition. The German industry giant FC Bayern, as well as the international football elite, are said to be interested in the 26-year-old. A circumstance that is further fueled by a contract that expires in 2027. DFB legend Lothar Matthäus has now turned to Schlotterbeck with some advice.
“Schlotterbeck has achieved a lot at Borussia and is valued. He could certainly earn more elsewhere, but in Dortmund he is captain, BVB is a great project. If I were him, I would think very carefully about whether I would leave the club or stay,” says Lothar Matthäus in his column for “Sky”, giving his assessment of Schlotterbeck’s future.
After all, BVB is doing well in third place in the Bundesliga and is still “promisingly represented” in the DFB Cup and the Champions League, says the record German international player, justifying his advice.
Trouble with BVB? Move to FC Bayern?
Schlotterbeck has recently been said several times to not be really happy with Dortmund’s game under coach Niko Kovac. There has even been talk of a quarrel with the club’s management, so a move to FC Bayern should definitely be an option for the defensive star, it was recently said.
The Black and Yellows, on the other hand, kept a low profile. Sports director Sebastian Kehl recently emphasized on “Sky”: “Nico knows what he has at BVB” and clearly added: “We would like to extend his contract with him and further advance his development.”
Teammate Julian Brandt explained: “Of course we’ll be happy if Schlotti stays with us. He’s a leading player with whom I get along very well.”
Schlotterbeck’s contract in the Ruhr area ends in the summer of 2027. If the DFB star does not extend his contract, BVB would probably have the last chance to generate a sizeable transfer fee after the current season.
