BVB brings Anthony Modeste from 1. FC Köln

Anthony Modeste’s move from 1. FC Köln to Borussia Dortmund is perfect. This was confirmed by both BVB and Domstadt on Monday evening.

After completing a medical check, the center forward signed a one-year contract with the runners-up until June 30, 2023. He will wear number 20 on his shirt.

According to media reports, a transfer fee of five to six million euros will flow to Cologne.

At BVB, Modeste is supposed to fill the sporting gap that was opened up after summer newcomer Sébastien Haller was diagnosed with a tumor. Exactly how long the Ivorian, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer, will be out is still unclear.

“After analyzing the past season, we made a conscious decision to sign a more classic striker who gives our offensive game a certain physicality, header power and goal threat,” said BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

BVB “a unique opportunity” for Anthony Modeste

He added: “Against the background of Sébastien Haller’s illness, we are glad that we were able to add such a striker to our squad in Anthony Modeste for the current season at short notice. A seasoned professional who knows the Bundesliga very well, who played last season 20 goals and who, with his profile, can take on exactly the role that our coach Edin Terzic envisions for BVB football.”

Modeste said: “I am very grateful to 1. FC Köln for the wonderful and successful time. Nevertheless, I have now decided to make a change. The offer from BVB gave me a unique opportunity at my age, also in the Playing in the Champions League and being able to prove myself at the highest level.”

Cologne will “always be my second home – I love the club and the city,” Modeste is quoted as saying on the FC website. He wishes his former teammates “a successful season”.

A lot of fuss at 1. FC Köln

The now perfect transfer of the 34-year-old to the black and yellow caused some excitement at 1. FC Köln on Sunday.

Head coach Steffen Baumgart dropped the top scorer from the squad for the Bundesliga opener against FC Schalke 04. However, Cologne showed a strong reaction to the unrest with a 3-1 win.

“It was planned that Tony would play. But there was already a verbal agreement with Dortmund. If someone decides not to follow our path, then they no longer have to play,” said Baumgart.

BVB: Significant salary increase for Anthony Modeste

Modeste is said to earn up to six million euros at BVB, which would mean a significant jump in salary for the French.

His previous contract in Cologne would have run until 2023, with an estimated annual salary of 3.5 million euros.
