Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke from soccer runner-up Borussia Dortmund is hoping for a weak phase in FC Bayern Munich.

“At some point it will crumble, at some point in the next few years it will collapse,” Watzke said in a sports talk on “Deutschlandfunk”.

The title fight is currently the only thing that doesn’t work in the Bundesliga. If things get closer there again, it will be “one of the most exciting leagues”.

Watzke, who is also the chairman of the supervisory board of the German Football League (DFL), considers interventions in the game mode, for example through playoffs, to be the last option: “If the Bundesliga were to become less and less attractive over the next five years, Bayern Munich would continue to be champions, maybe you have to think about it as a last resort.”

Watzke is hoping for new Bundesliga stars

Record champions Bayern won their tenth championship title in a row last season.

When it comes to foreign marketing, the league should rely on self-developed stars, said Watzke. “I also know that the stars are running away from us. If we have to make new ones, it’s very simple. It’s a very simple principle,” said the BVB boss and recalled the example of Robert Lewandowski.

The Pole was still unknown when he moved to Dortmund, now he is a world star. The league should market such careers better in the future.
