“I will be very sad”
As expected, Axel Witsel will not extend his contract with Borussia Dortmund, which expires at the end of the season. The 33-year-old Belgian confirmed in a media round after the 3:4 defeat against the rather unplanned that he will no longer appear in black and yellow in the coming season. “We’re conceding too many goals, this season and last, we have to improve on that for next season,” said Witsel (quoted via “WAZ”) and then pushed afterwards: “I said ‘we’, but I won’t be there anymore, I’ll be gone next season.”
The central midfielder moved from Tianjin Tianhai to Dortmund in 2018 for 20 million euros and was part of the permanent staff for much of his time at BVB. As a result of a ruptured Achilles tendon in January 2021, which put Witsel out of action for about six months, he has been swinging between the starting XI and the bench this season. In total, the right-footed player made 143 appearances (13 goals, six assists) for Borussia.

“I’m very happy that I played here at the highest level for four years,” said Witsel. “But I’m sad to leave the club, I have a lot of friends here and great teammates. I was here for four years, that’s a lot. But at the end of the day, that’s the life of a footballer. I’m looking forward to the last game, but I’ll also be very sad.” On the last day of the Bundesliga match, Dortmund will meet Hertha BSC at home (May 14, 3:30 p.m.).
Witsel after BVB farewell in the MLS? Return to Belgium excluded
Where the football journey will go from the summer, Witsel left open. According to information from Transfermarkt.us, both Los Angeles FC and LA Galaxy from Major League Soccer are interested, and the BVB professional is also quite open to a move to the USA. Meanwhile, Witsel didn’t want to confirm anything, only ruled out a return home: “I’m not going back to Belgium. Not yet.”
