The first part of the sequel is scheduled to be released on June 20, 2025.
The British post-apocalyptic horror film entitled “28 Years Later” returns in 2025, but apparently not with an appearance by Cillian Murphy as previously suspected.
The 2002 film becomes a trilogy
A spectacle is expected with the release of the zombie film in June 2025. Even before its premiere, the “28 Days Later” sequel scores with a brilliant cast: The cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer in the main roles. Additionally, as announced, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return as director and writer. The duo directed the acclaimed original 28 Days Later in 2002.
The rumors that Cillian Murphy would also be involved in the planned trilogy caused particular excitement. Not only is Murphy set to executive produce the sequel, but his role from the 2002 film (Jim, then the lead) was set to return to the screen in “a surprising way and in a way that allows the character to grow.” as “NME” reported.

Cillian Murphy is at least not in the first part
Now Andrew Macdonald put an abrupt end to the fans’ euphoria in an interview with “Empire”. He confirmed that the “Peaky Blinders” actor would not be seen in front of the camera in the remake, at least not in the first part of the trilogy. “We wanted him to be there and he wanted to be there too. He’s not in the first film, but I hope Jim will be back at some point,” says Macdonald.
Although he is not seen in front of the camera, the 48-year-old Irishman is said to have been involved behind the scenes. “He’s involved as an executive producer at the moment,” says Macdonald, “and I hope we can work with him on the trilogy in some capacity in the future.”
The second part of the “28 Years Later” trilogy “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” is being produced with Nia DaCosta as director and is scheduled to be released a few months after the premiere of the first part in January 2026. Danny Boyle will again direct the as yet untitled third part, as “Empire” reports. When exactly this will come out has not yet been announced.
