Gediflora is at the top worldwide. The cuttings go to 42 countries, from the US to Asia. Vincent Verbaeys, Gediflora: “We sell young starting material to growers worldwide. Since last year we have exceeded the 100 million plants mark for the first time. We are of course a bit proud of that. It is the first time that we have succeeded in doing so.”
Trend sensitive
Chrysanthemums also follow trends. Plants with larger flowers are in. “The Umbra is a very nice example of this. The flower is twice as large as that of a standard bulb chrysanthemum. And it also has a much longer vase life. The flower remains beautiful for six to eight weeks.”
Also on terraces
Chrysanthemums are traditionally mainly found in cemeteries, but Gediflora sees that the plant is increasingly finding its way to the terrace. “We see this in Germany and the Netherlands. Not a single chrysanthemum ends up in the cemetery there. We mainly see younger people, in their thirties, who buy a chrysanthemum purely as a patio plant. An ideal way to get some color on the patio at this time of year.”
