Amber contacted the municipality. She explained that she has an MBO diploma as a teaching assistant and works at a primary school in Bussum. She wanted to use the priority scheme. A short answer came to this: “The Education Assistant function does not fall under the scheme, it is only for competent teachers (PO) or teachers (VO, first or second-degree).”

“That was of course a shame,” she says. “Especially because the work that we as educational assistants do is also very important. I support a teacher in a kindergarten, and that help is really needed. Teachers have much more tasks than just teaching. Especially with young children it is valuable if there are extra hands and eyes in the classroom.”

Amazing news

She was disappointed, but also understood that the municipality might have to limit itself to just the competent teachers.

Until Last week the news came out That the experiment of the municipality ‘has yielded little’. But one teacher could be helped because they generally earn too much for social rent. The test did not result in what was expected.

That makes Amber angry. “When I read the news, I thought: isn’t that very crazy? It really felt like level discrimination. Why did they not adjust those criteria? I do qualify for social rent with my salary.”

Better next time

She hopes that the municipality will look better at who can really be helped in the next attempt. “Take healthcare and police also with you in such a scheme, as they did in Hilversum. And also look at support staff. Because in education we are just as desperately needed.”
