The 20th matchday is behind us Bundesliga teams and suddenly there is hope that the championship fight could be exciting again. In the Bundesliga Update Podcast, hosts Anne Hilt and Jens Walbrodt weigh up the arguments. Can Dortmund really pose a threat to Bayern again?
FC Bayern Munich is dropping points in Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion, opening the door for Borussia Dortmund to shorten the gap again to 6 points. BVB narrowly wins its game against 1. FC Heidenheim – and makes it exciting again?
Last season there was a six point gap between Bayern and Leverkusen after matchday 20. It didn’t get any less over the course of the season (despite a defeat against Bochum and a draw against Dortmund and Leipzig). And this time too it seems difficult to imagine that the record champions will miss out on many more points.
Could the DFB Cup exit be an advantage?
Borussia Dortmund have already been eliminated from the DFB Cup, so they don’t have an English week ahead of them for the time being. “Dortmund almost has to be happy that they are no longer in the DFB Cup,” says podcast host Anne Hilt in the new episode “Bundesliga Update”. This means that BVB is avoiding another English week, but from mid-February onwards they will be really challenged with the Champions League playoffs around the league games against Leipzig and Bayern.
Bayern, on the other hand, is still in the DFB Cup (February 11th against RB Leipzig), but does not have to go the extra round of the Champions League playoffs: “I am of the opinion that Bayern are getting over this dip in their form. Now the intensity is a little less,” says podcast host Jens Walbrodt.
BVB more solid this season?
Heidenheim had many chances in the game at BVB to take at least one point from Dortmund. “This is a classic game in which BVB would have dropped points in the past and that is perhaps something that could encourage the BVB fans: this time they will pull it off,” says Jens Walbrodt. On the other hand, Serhou Guirassy also missed a penalty and Anne Hilt says: “Every time they were convinced that they were a better team than the season before, they showed that they weren’t.”
BVB can no longer afford any slip-ups in league games and would have to hope that Bayern continue to drop points. In the direct duel on February 28th, BVB has the chance to reduce the score to three. Bayern will initially face an opponent from the Champions League region next weekend, TSG Hoffenheim, while Dortmund have to play in Wolfsburg.
Point as HSV booster in the relegation battle?
The Bundesliga Update team also discusses the other situation in the Bundesliga. For example, there is a detailed analysis of Hamburger SV’s first point win against Bayern in 12 years. Can HSV draw strength from this for the relegation battle? And of course there is also a detailed discussion of the other games of the Bundesliga weekend.
