1. FC Union Berlin has released Bo Svensson as coach. The Bundesliga club announced that a decision on the replacement of the coaching position will be made in the coming days.

Bo Svensson is no longer the coach of 1. FC Union Berlin. The Bundesliga soccer team announced this on Friday afternoon. By dismissing the 45-year-old Dane, who only took up the job in the summer, the Köpenick team is reacting to the sporting crisis of the past few weeks.

Winless for nine games

Across all competitions, 1. FC Union has been without a win for nine games. This also included a 0-2 debacle in the DFB Cup at third division team Arminia Bielefeld. Six days ago the “Iron Men” played Werder Bremen in their last game before the winter break lost 4-1.

It is still unclear who will lead the Köpenickers out of the negative vortex. According to the club, a decision on who will take over the team on an interim basis will be made in the next few days. 1. FC Union will start training again on January 2nd. Three other team support staff, Babak Keyhanfar, Kristoffer Wichmann and Tijan Njie, also have to go.

Heldt: “Significant change necessary” to reverse the trend

“After a detailed analysis of the season so far, we are convinced that a significant change is necessary to reverse the trend. (…) We would like to thank Bo Svensson and his team for the work they have done and wish them all the best for their future journey,” Union’s managing director of professional football Horst Heldt is quoted in the statement.

Svensson’s release comes immediately before landmark duels. After the winter break we will play against the Keller competitors from Heidenheim (Saturday, January 11th, 3:30 p.m.) and Augsburg (Friday, January 15th, 8:30 p.m.).

Svensson’s term began promisingly

It was initially not apparent that the relationship between the Köpenickers and Bo Svensson would become a misunderstanding. After eight match days, the Köpenickers were in fourth place in the table. After a respectful draw against Leipzig or Frankfurt or one Victory against Dortmund Some fans even dreamed of Europe again.

But since the end of October there has been less and less interaction among the Berliners. 1. FC Union had not scored many goals before. But now the defense – which had previously been typically safe for the Union – on which Svensson had focused his attention, was crumbling. From week to week my courage and self-confidence dwindled.

Immediately after the defeat at the end of the year in Bremen, managing director Horst Heldt Svensson no longer gave any support: “We have to let that sink in first. We have a tendency that is not good or satisfactory,” he said at the time. It was clear that the Danish coach was wobbling. Now his end is sealed.
