Bundesliga table after halves: Bayern weak after the break

S04 often within striking distance at the break

Joshua Kimmich saved FC Bayern a point against 1. FC Köln in the 90th minute of matchday 17 after Ellyes Skhiri had given the visitors the lead after just four minutes. The second half went 1-0 to Bayern Munich, who bucked their own trend from the first half of the season. In fact, Julian Nagelsmann’s team surprisingly often gambled away games they thought were safe in the second 45 minutes, as a look at the TM statistics “table after minutes” shows. Union Berlin, on the other hand, did it the other way around.

If you only take the second half of every Bundesliga game as a basis, Bayern are only fifth in the table. With 29 points, the record champions RB Leipzig (36 points), VfL Wolfsburg (32), Union (31) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (31) would have to give way. Up to the break tea, however, no team is even remotely on an equal footing: nine points is the lead over second-placed Frankfurt, who have 32 points.

With the number of victories that Munich have achieved this season, it could be assumed that in the second half 100 percent are often no longer necessary and the foot is taken off the gas. In fact, FCB has had clear successes in five of the six – 6-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt, 7-0 against VfL Bochum, 4-0 against Bayer 04, 5-0 against SC Freiburg, 6-2 against Mainz 05 and 6 :1 against Werder Bremen – also won the second half. Only in the opening win against SGE on the 1st matchday did Frankfurt manage a 1-1 draw in the second round.

Instead, it was the tight games that Bayern mostly gave up towards the end. In the only defeat of the season against FC Augsburg (0:1) Mergim Berisha scored in the 59th minute, against Leipzig (1:1) Marcel Halstenberg equalized after the break (52nd), against VfB Stuttgart there were even two leads, including at half-time, playful and Borussia Dortmund got a point after being 2-0 down – the Munich side were still in the lead there too.

Bundesliga: Union Berlin turns up after a change of sides – Schalke collapses

Meanwhile, Union Berlin made the biggest positive difference in the second 45 minutes. Although Leipzig and Wolfsburg get even more points than the “Iron” after the change of sides, they are already in the top 5 in the league. The capital club, which is second in the ‘correct’ table, is only the ninth-best team in the first half with 22 points.

On the other hand, Urs Fischer’s team regularly demonstrates comeback qualities, as the two games after the World Cup break showed. Union fell behind in the 3-1 (0-1) win against TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday and in the 2-1 (1-1) win at Werder Bremen on Wednesday evening, but decided the game in their own favour. On the 12th matchday, that was a third time in the 2-1 (0-1) win against Gladbach – only 1. FC Köln won as many games from behind, but were also five times behind.

TM Stats: Points after falling behind / points after leading

Far worse after and better before the change of sides for Schalke 04. The “Knappen” would still be in a relegation zone when the final whistle was played at half-time, but would hand over the “Red Lantern” to VfB Stuttgart. The Swabians were only in the lead in the 4:1 (2:1) against VfL Bochum on the 10th matchday after 45 minutes and with 13 points they had one point less than Schalke. The Royal Blues, on the other hand, would be within striking distance of lower midfield in the generally very balanced table of the first half.

In the second round, the Royal Blues regularly break in: Only eight points and a goal difference of 8:23 are recorded in the second period. VfL Bochum (9 points, 7:21 goals) is also far behind in 16th place (FC Augsburg with 18 points).
