Mainz (dpa) – Sports director Martin Schmidt from FSV Mainz 05 has almost ruled out a timely departure of the German U21 captain Jonathan Burkardt.

“There will probably be a sign saying ‘not for sale’, of course, because it’s incredibly important to us,” said Schmidt on the Sky TV channel when asked about a price tag for the 21-year-old attacker. Burkardt has had a strong season in Mainz so far and has already scored seven league goals.

He also knows “how important it is for him to be able to continue playing like this with us and to develop further. That’s why I think he’s very happy here at the moment,” said Schmidt before the game in the Bundesliga against VfL Bochum. According to Schmidt, the Mainz team have not planned any changes in the winter transfer window so far, provided that the healing process for the injured Marcus Ingvartsen and Adam Szalai is not delayed. “Otherwise we are very happy with the squad.”
