After ages, Hamburger SV scored again against FC Bayern – and then scored. The Munich team made a mistake at 2:2 (1:1) after a breathtaking game for the second time in a row in the Bundesliga because Luka Vuskovic was able to equalize in the 53rd minute after goals from Harry Kane (42nd) and Luis Diaz (46th).
Fabio Vieira had previously given the HSV fans a moment that they hadn’t experienced for a long time. After exactly ten years and nine days, they were able to celebrate their team’s goal against FC Bayern again because the Arsenal loanee had placed a penalty in the corner (34′). It is questionable whether this was justified, because Joshua Kimmich’s contact with Nicolai Remberg was only minimal – but that didn’t matter for HSV.
The Hamburg team had earned this special experience with a good performance. At the beginning of the game, Vuskovic had a great chance to take the lead after a corner, but his header from five meters missed Manuel Neuer’s goal (6th). The former national goalkeeper also saved in the 24th minute when Nicolas Capaldo appeared dangerously in front of him after a counterattack.
HSV were lucky several times before Kane struck again
However, there were also several moments in which the hosts had to survive the Bavarian offensive power. This was achieved twice thanks to the saves by Daniel Heuer Fernandes against Michael Olise (14th) and Lennart Karl (15th), once the HSV goalkeeper was helped by the crossbar, which Kimmich hit with a powerful shot from 20 meters (29th). But the lead, which fell shortly afterwards, did not last until the break.
After a dream pass from Alphonso Davies, Serge Gnabry deliberately played the ball into the middle, where Kimmich missed the huge chance, but inadvertently served Kane directly in front of the opponent’s goal, who coldly converted it to 1-1 (42nd). It was the Englishman’s 22nd goal of the season, two of which he scored in the 5-0 win in the first leg.
Harry Kane keeps track of the mess and securely converts to equalize 1-1.
Diaz only needs a few seconds to score
Nevertheless, HSV not only tasted its first goal against Munich in many years, but also its first point win. That happened in 2014 thanks to a 0-0 draw; 16.5 years ago, Mladen Petric scored Hamburg’s last win against the German record champions. But just 42 seconds after the restart, Bayern seemed to dash the hosts’ hopes.
Shortly after his substitution, Diaz received the ball perfectly from Olise and the Colombian converted the assist to give the guests the lead (46th). Diaz then had a blackout and gave Vieira a great chance to make it 2-2, but his direct shot from 18 meters went just wide (49′). But this moment at the latest brought the people of Hamburg back their faith.
Vuskovic makes the HSV Arena shake
Coach Merlin Polzin’s team bravely continued to storm – so bravely that defender Vuskovic emerged from the game in a center forward position and headed William Mikelbrencis’ cross into the goal (53′). Shortly afterwards, HSV even had the chance to take the lead, but Capaldo missed the empty goal with his knee after Neuer’s fist defense failed (59th).
Hamburg’s fan favorite Luka Vuskovic celebrates in front of the north curve.
Otherwise, Bayern pushed hard to avoid their second mistake in a row in the Bundesliga after their 2-1 defeat against FC Augsburg. The record champions came very close to taking the lead again after a corner in the 65th minute when Dayot Upamecano scored coach Vincent Kompany’s team’s second goal from close range.
Davies saves FC Bayern from falling behind
The point gain for HSV took on more and more shape – but the result almost tripled. After a long ball, Neuer misjudged, whereupon Rayan Philippe passed the ball past him to Vieira, who shot towards the empty goal – but Davies saved for FC Bayern with an incredible sprint (74th).
He continued to run, but was thwarted by the self-sacrificing HSV defense, whose players repeatedly lay on the ground suffering from cramps. And this effort was worth it, Hamburg was able to withstand the pressure, Heuer Fernandes only had to save once against Jamal Musiala in the 90th minute. HSV took a point from FC Bayern and celebrated extensively that for the first time in over eleven years there was no defeat against the feared opponent of the last decade (nine games, zero points, 2:39 goals).
“We are extremely happy and grateful that we were able to experience this moment together with the stadium. We knew that we needed luck, but also had to be courageous in our own possession of the ball. It was crucial that we showed up in uncomfortable spaces for the opponent. Big compliments to my coaching team for the preparation and to my team for the implementation.”said Polzin in the Sportschau interview.
Eberl and FC Bayern complain about the referee
Munich had previously quarreled with referee Harm Osmers again because Daniel Elfadli blocked a shot from Kimmich with his arm – in this case the decision not to award a penalty was completely correct (90th + 1).
Kane (r.) would have liked to see a penalty – but referee Harm Osmers sticks to his initial assessment.
“It was a very emotional game, HSV threw everything into the balance that you need as an underdog against FC Bayern. But I think that the referee was wrong with many of the decisions.”said sports director Max Eberl in the Sportschau interview after the game. “That doesn’t feel good, he often fell into HSV’s traps when the players threw themselves down. That really annoyed and upset us, but we have to deal with that better.”
HSV point brings jump in the table
The counter not only had tremendous emotional value for HSV, but was also extremely important in terms of sport. As a result, the promoted team left relegation place 16 and moved up to 13th place, and also gained additional self-confidence for the next game against bottom team 1. FC Heidenheim next Saturday (3:30 p.m.).
On the other hand, if Borussia Dortmund wins against Heidenheim on Sunday, Bayern’s lead could shrink to six points again for a long time. Will the Bundesliga still have a fight for the championship title? Of course, Munich wants to prevent that and demonstrate their strength again with a win in the top game next Sunday against TSG Hoffenheim (5:30 p.m.).
