Bundesliga: Heaviest defeat for Union Berlin against Bayer 04

Double pack from Diaby

1. FC Union Berlin has lost the lead in the Bundesliga after almost two months and a hearty smack. On Sunday afternoon, coach Urs Fischer’s team lost 5-0 (0-0) at Bayer Leverkusen and had to concede first place to FC Bayern. Former Unioner Robert Andrich (46th minute), Moussa Diaby (56th/58th), Adam Hlozek (68th) and Mitchel Bakker (76th) scored the goals in front of 30,210 spectators. For Union it was the highest bankruptcy in Bundesliga history.

Bayer coach Xabi Alonso, who celebrated his second victory in the Bundesliga as coach, had to do without striker Patrik Schick, Charles Aranguiz and Paulinho for a short time. Schick, who was unlucky in the course of the season so far, was absent due to adductor problems. According to the club, Aranguiz has calf problems and Paulinho is suffering from a cold. In addition, defender Jonathan Tah initially only took a seat on the substitutes’ bench.

Union coach Urs Fischer also made four changes to the starting eleven compared to the Europa League game at Union St. Gilloise last Thursday. Among other things, the Leverkusen loanee Lennart Grill moved into the goal, who had an uneventful first half. Bayer started the second half all the more furiously. Barely a minute after the restart, Andrich put the hosts on the road to victory after a corner kicked in by Kerem Demirbay. The midfielder was quicker with his toe on the moment than his replacement at Union, Rani Khedira, who described the second half as a “total failure”.

A former player also played a leading role in the second goal. After Union initially failed to finish in the opposing penalty area and had to play the ball back, goalkeeper Grill, on loan from Leverkusen, frittered away the ball in the middle of his own half to Jeremie Frimpong, who immediately served Diaby. The bustling attacker sprinted towards the empty goal and didn’t let the Berlin defenders stop him (56′). “The standard pulled the plug on us a bit. The first goal was unnecessary, the second a gift,” said Fischer.

Two minutes later, Union was back in attack, and the hosts countered again. This time Mitchell Bakker served the 23-year-old Frenchman Diaby with a wide pass into free space (58th). And even when Hlozek scored his first Bundesliga goal, who converted a pass from Nadiem Amiri with his heel, the Berliners had not yet formed up in defense after an attack of their own. Bakker then closed the sack.

Union captain Christopher Trimmel took the package calmly: “We’re playing a great season, we’re through in the cup, we’re through in the Europa League. It was clear to us that we would get a pack.” However, the Austrian national player not only complained about the first two “stupid goals”. “The first two goals didn’t have to happen. After that we wanted to remain compact, but we were hit hard. That happens sometimes,” said Trimmel, “what happens after the second goal shouldn’t happen.”
