Bundesliga: Freiburg earns a point against Bayern Munich

As of: March 1, 2024 10:54 p.m

SC Freiburg wrested a draw from record champions Bayern Munich at the start of the 24th matchday. The Breisgauer team took the lead, then Bayern turned the game around. But Lucas Höler saved the point.

The game ended 2:2 (1:1) on Friday evening (03/01/24). On the first day of work for Munich’s new sports director Max Eberl, the Munich team benefited shortly before the end from a brilliant individual performance by Jamal Musiala, who scored what was supposed to be the winning goal for Bayern by dribbling with a final artificial shot. But Höler spoiled the Munich team’s celebration of three points with an equally impressive shot. As a result, Thomas Tuchel’s team failed to significantly reduce the gap to Bayer Leverkusen and could fall even further behind in the title race.

Worth seeing Opening goal

Freiburg’s opening goal left the mouths of the Freiburg fans agape in amazement: After a cross from Vincenzo Grifo from the left, Roland Sallai headed the ball unchallenged from five meters into the Bayern goal. There Manuel Neuer parried with a world-class reflex, Sallai followed up and hit the crossbar with an overhead kick from a central position. Once again, the guests from Bavaria were unable to get access to the ball. Instead, Nicolas Höfler got through with his head, Christian Günter was free on the left, took a few more steps into the middle and slammed the ball directly into the bottom right of the Munich goal.

As a result, Grifo and Günter continued to spread a lot of enthusiasm, which made the Munich team look bad time and time again. The record champions appeared unsettled again and produced an enormous number of precision errors in the build-up to the game. Grifo took advantage of this in the 20th minute, prevailed against three Bayern defenders and aimed for the bottom right corner again. But this time the ball passed just past the goal to the right.

Tel with irresistible Mission

After a good half hour, Bayern gained more control of the game. What quickly led to success: A Munich corner that wasn’t cleared very efficiently landed at Mathys Tel, who hit the far corner from the left corner of the penalty area with good assertiveness and good shooting technique. Leon Goretzka produced the next dangerous shot a little later when he tested the SCF keeper Noah Atubolu with a touchdown and he was only able to secure the ball with great difficulty in the follow-up.

Big chances after the break on both sides

Shortly after the break, Harry Kane narrowly missed the Freiburg goal after he had just put the ball in front of himself with his backheel (47′). But Freiburg also continued to be dangerous, Maximilian Eggestein narrowly missed the right corner of Bayern’s goal after Sallai put it down (50′).

Then it took 20 minutes until the Munich team were able to create their next big chance. Atubolu was just able to direct Musiala’s first shot around the right post. On the following corner, Lucas Höler saved a header from Kane on the line.

Musiala with a gala goal

Then came Jamal Musiala’s hour. The German international, whose loss of form embodied the misery of the German superior team, which had slipped into a kind of crisis, like no other, did not achieve much in the game despite a good effort. But then in the 75th minute, the extremely talented youngster dribbled against three Freiburg players in the opposing penalty area, claimed the ball and turned the ball into the far corner from an acute angle.

A good ten minutes later, Höler did the same thing as the young Bayern star when he received a long throw-in in the right penalty area from Michael Gregoritsch and used a shot on the move to equalize – the final point. “We played a good game, we can be happy”said Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo on DAZN, “It was clear that you had to suffer against Bayern.” “We didn’t play a good first half hour and we were right to be behind. We showed a good reaction, played a good second half with lots of chances and lost our reward in the end.”said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel on the internet broadcaster DAZN.
