Eintracht Frankfurt has found a successor for the sacked coach Albert Riera. It’s an old friend.

Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt signs Adi Hütter as their new coach. The club officially announced this on Sunday. The 56-year-old signed a working paper in Frankfurt until 2029 and is entering his second term as coach on the Main. He had already been on the sidelines for Eintracht between 2018 and 2021. He takes over from Spaniard Albert Riera, who was fired after just three unsuccessful months in office. Hütter last coached AS Monaco and was fired there in October 2025 after more than two years in office.

“Adi Hütter stands for courageous offensive football, clarity and discipline,” said sports director Markus Krösche in a club statement. “He showed at his stations that he can combine fast-paced transitional football with possession of the ball,” continued Krösche. “After very good discussions, we are convinced that we can further develop Eintracht together. It is also an advantage that Adi knows the structures, the environment and people in and around the club and does not require any special adjustment period.”

Disappointing season

Hütter himself said: “For me it is something very special and emotional to be Eintracht’s coach again.” His first term in Frankfurt am Main shaped him. “Looking back, I always had the feeling that I wasn’t finished yet. I’m all the more pleased to have the opportunity to tackle this task with a lot of work, discipline and a clear focus.”

After third place and Champions League qualification last year, Frankfurt disappointed last season. With eighth place, qualification for international business was missed. In January, coach Dino Toppmöller was fired after a good two and a half years. The successor, Riera, turned out to be the wrong choice. He was unable to stabilize Eintracht sportingly and reportedly fell out with several players. He was released after the last game of the season.

No silent exit

The fact that Eintracht brings back a coach is something of a tradition for the Hessians. After Paul Oßwald, Peter Szabo, Dietrich Weise, Jörg Berger, Dragoslav Stepanovic, Karl-Heinz Körbel and Armin Veh, Hütter is the eighth coach to be given a second chance on the Main.
