The former Bayern boss is negotiating a commitment to France – but is that really the hottest lead? Wouldn’t a commitment to a top Bundesliga club be much closer?
Oliver Kahn is apparently thinking about investing in the traditional French club Girondins Bordeaux. After the former CEO of FC Bayern had become quiet in recent months, his name has now appeared in the media again in connection with this news. However, the talks are still “in the early stages,” as Kahn reported to Bild.
A Kahn engagement in France? That would definitely be a surprise. Especially since he would have to do development work in Bordeaux. The six-time French champions had to face forced relegation to the fourth division after bankruptcy in the summer.
However, the former world-class goalkeeper may have few alternatives. At least even the rumors about new job offers for Kahn have been limited since he left Bayern in May 2023. The magazine “Sports Illustrated” managed to win Kahn as an author for the newly created “Business of Football” section. Kahn was obviously out of the question for a position with responsibility at a top club – neither abroad nor in the Bundesliga.
But why actually? Did statements made by Bavaria’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß cause lasting damage to him? He more or less directly accused Kahn of working too little and ruining the mood in the office and the salary structure in the squad. On the other hand, Bayern was quite successful under Kahn. Kahn was already a member of the board at the “Sextuple” 2020, i.e. winning six titles in one season including the Champions League and championship under coach Hansi Flick. With him as chairman, three championships were added in the following years. Only after his departure did Bayern disappoint with a titleless season.
Shouldn’t at least top German clubs be interested in signing Kahn? Especially Borussia Dortmund, where managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke will be leaving in autumn 2025 and those responsible have not necessarily presented themselves to the public as strong leaders?
