BTS singer Jin has shared photos of himself via the Weverse fan app for the first time since starting his military service. At the end of his five-week basic military training, he also sent a message to the “Army”, the self-description of sworn BTS fans. “I’m having a good time. The military gave me permission to post these photos. Army, stay happy and healthy.” The photo shows him with a mask and in uniform. He will serve the remainder of his one-and-a-half year service as a training assistant at the Yeongcheon Military Academy. He was also trained there.

Videos showing the graduation ceremony of basic training have also surfaced online. After joining the army, recruits have limited access to their cell phones and the internet. Many K-Pop groups use the “Weverse” app to directly connect with their fans. It was developed by HYBE, the label of BTS.

BTS in military service

The 30-year-old was called up in December 2022. In fact, all able-bodied South Korean men have to do their military service by the age of 28. In 2020, however, Parliament passed a law raising the age limit to 30 for those “who have made outstanding contributions to art and culture”.

Jin is the first of the seven BTS members to join the army. In 2022, the band announced that they would be on hiatus until 2025 so that all members could do their military service. Some solo projects are also planned during this time. In October 2022, Jin released his first solo single “Astronaut” as a temporary farewell to the public. Among others, Coldplay was involved in its creation, with whom BTS have already worked together on “My Universe”. Members J-Hope and RM have released albums of their own. Debut albums by Jimin, V, Suga and Jungkook are reportedly set to follow. A documentary series about the band will also be released on Disney+.
