Brutal Telstar makes it pretty difficult for FC Volendam in interesting fishing derby

In the fishing derby FC Volendam has pulled the longest straw. The leader fell behind early against a good footballing Telstar, but repaired the damage before half time: 2-1. The Velsenaren were entitled to more on the basis of the first half, but missed a number of great opportunities.

Volendam started with a striking line-up, in which Kevin Visser returned after eighteen months of injury, Brian Plat was missing and Josh Flint filled the left back position. It felt uncomfortable at Volendam and Telstar made very good use of that. The White Lions took the lead within five minutes via Glynor Plet. The 34-year-old striker headed in a corner impeccably: 0-1.

The Velsenaren then showed the best first half hour of the season, in which they were by far the better match. This paid off in opportunities for Ozan Kökcü, debutant Randy Wolters and Rashaan Fernandes, who saw his bet shatter on the crossbar. Volendam therefore had a hard time against the number sixteen of the first division.

turnaround

Only after half an hour was Volendam really dangerous for the first time. Gaetano Oristanio drove goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. to the limit with a technically perfectly executed circumnavigation. From the ensuing corner, Mike Eerdhuijzen headed the home team into a tie: 1-1. The game then waved up and down at De Dijk and an attractive match ensued.

Slightly against the odds, Volendam took the lead in the 37th minute. Defender Siebe Vandermeulen made a mistake and Robert Mühren eagerly took advantage of that. The striker, who had not been in the game until then, sniffed the ball and worked the ball well behind Koeman Jr.: 2-1. That was the twentieth goal of the season for the Volendammer.

Despite that lead, trainer Wim Jonk went to the dressing room disappointed halfway through.

Tank is empty

After the break, the game had cooled down a bit and was more in control. Volendam was positionally better and Telstar had few opportunities to get out. The entertainment of the first half had disappeared and Volendam made a number of changes. Franco Antonucci, who was hired from Feyenoord this week, came in. Telstar’s only achievement after the break came from Plet’s foot who hit a ball too thin after a fine attack over the right side.

It was more or less a matter of waiting for Volendam to expand the score. Via Mühren and Oristanio, the home team did get the chances for that, but in the finish they lacked sharpness. The tank at Telstar seemed empty after an intensive first half, allowing Volendam to finish the game without any problems.
