The stumbling stones are a lasting reminder of the people who risked their lives for freedom and justice. In Sint-Ewoudsstraat in Sint-Andries, one is dedicated to Edgard Sabbe, who sabotaged the Nazis. He was eventually arrested and deported.
According to great-grandson Nicolas Slabbinck, Sabbe joined the resistance at a relatively late age. “There were 17 of them, they sabotaged train tracks and collected ammunition. So those were major risks, they even met to set up actions.”
