He discovered detailed design drawings, once made by a British competitive sailor, and immediately made his big brother Huig enthusiastic. “He has the knowledge, I have the space. That came together nicely. I briefly trained as a furniture maker, but this is really for professionals like Joop,” Huig explains. “Uig solves things. He is the technician of the two of us,” adds Joop.
Brotherly bond getting stronger
In between the strong stories, the two work hard on their ‘double enders’, as the type of boat is called. They enjoy. Not only from the construction process, but also from the brotherly bond that is becoming stronger in the meantime. “It is great that we, as people over seventy, can still make this ‘journey’ together. Our bond grows along the way. The beautiful views are getting closer,” says Joop.
Because he can see himself sailing soon. Uvula too. As a fisherman who shows what it used to be like in his village and he also muses about recreational trips with the family. “When the grandchildren have their B diploma, they can come along. I can already see it in my mind. With this beautiful weather, fishing, a flapping sail. And I can’t even sail! I still have to learn that,” he laughs.
