Andre Braugher was nominated for an Emmy eleven times and was often seen in series as a police officer. Now the actor has died at the age of 61.
Braugher died after a short illness, his spokeswoman Jennifer Allen confirmed to Variety. He became known to a large audience in 1989 with a role in the war film “Glory” about a regiment without white soldiers. Here he played alongside Denzel Washington, who won an Oscar for his performance.
Despite studying at the renowned Stanford University and acting training at New York’s famous Juilliard School, Braugher complained that he was offered very few roles as a PoC. However, television then became his major venue.
With his role as Detective Frank Pembleton in the series “Homicide” (by later “The Wire” creator David Simon) and as Captain Ray Holt in the Netflix hit “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” he thrilled an audience of millions as a versatile mime was later authentic both in the serious and in the comic areas.

His performance in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” alone earned him four Emmy nominations. In 1998, Braugher won his first Emmy for “Homicide.” Although the Chicago native has been cast in many television series, he has also appeared in numerous Hollywood films, including Deadly Close (1993), City of Angels (1998), Frequency (2000) and The Mist (2007 ). The actor was most recently seen in Maria Schrader’s US hit “She Said” about the beginnings of the MeToo movement.
Braugher was married to his “Homicide” co-star Ami Brabson and had three sons with her. The specific cause of death was not known.
