British tourist falls 300 feet from ‘ladder to heaven’ in Austrian mountains | Abroad

A British tourist (42) has died after falling from the ‘staircase to heaven’, part of the via ferrata Großer Donnerkogel in the Austrian mountains.

The Briton, who fell 90 metres, wanted to climb a ladder in the Dachstein Mountains known as the local ‘stairway to heaven’. The ladder is 40 meters long.

“It is a tragic incident,” says a police spokesperson. Malicious intent has been ruled out, according to the police. The man in his forties was reportedly climbing alone. Two helicopters arrived on the scene, but all help came too late. No further information is known about the accident at this time.

The ‘ladder to heaven’ is especially popular with adventurous influencers for the spectacular photos. The stairs are part of the via ferrata – a course of steel cables and metal rungs cut into rock walls – to the top of the Großer Donnerkogel in Austria. The summit is marked by a large cross and offers beautiful views. According to adventurers, it is not an easy climb.
