From the first disagreements at the 2017 World Cup to the diplomatic incident with Quario, to the canceled interview with beasts: Fede and Goggia and a harmony that was never born
“Sofia and Federica were never friends, not even when they were nobody, they never cared”. The sentence is from Ninna Quario, Brignone’s mother. It is dated 2022, but as demonstrated by the failure to give Belve’s interview the green light due to Fede’s alleged remarks about his rival, it is more in force than ever. Are you a Goggist or a Brignonist? A bit like football, rare cases of those who support both with the same passion. Here is the story of a (glorious) rivalry with rare moments of harmony or, better said, endurance. And to think that they started the World Cup with the same result in the same race: 48th place in the Lienz giant slalom. Brignone in 2007, Goggia 4 years later. One of the few things in common between the two, also different in their approach to competitiveness: for years, and even a bit forcedly because her dream has always been versatility, Fede dedicated herself above all to giant slalom. Goggia has always had speed in his heart. Even if Goggia’s first world medal came in giant slalom (at the World Championships in St. Moritz, guess who in front?), and if Brignone won gold in super-G (before the giant slalom) in the extraordinary feat at the Cortina Games. Training and competing together has certainly benefited both of us. But don’t say it out loud.
