Brazilian court bans Telegram messaging service | Abroad

Telegram will be fined 1 million real (180,000 euros) per day until it complies with the court decision.
According to Justice Minister Flavio Dino, anti-Semitic groups are active on Telegram. “We know this is at the root of violence against our children and young people,” he said.

Brazilian police requested data from Telegram as part of an investigation into a school shooting in Aracruz in November.

The government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wants to take a tougher approach to fake news and hate on the internet. Earlier this month, the Brazilian government criticized Twitter for not properly moderating reports of violence in Brazilian schools.

Nearly two-thirds of Brazilian smartphone users have downloaded Telegram, according to a recent survey.

It is not the first time that the company has clashed with the Brazilian authorities. Last year, the Supreme Court also issued a ban, but Telegram quickly responded to the demands – remove fake news – so that the platform did not have to go offline.
