Brave Telstar goes down fighting and narrowly loses to PSV in KNVB cup

In an entertaining match, Telstar failed to stunt against PSV. In the eighth final of the KNVB Cup, Andries Jonker’s team lost 2-1. The White Lions still surprisingly took the lead in the first half.

The first shot on goal came from Telstar midfielder Cas Dijkstra. His attempt went a few yards wide. The visitors started the game strongly and it was Özgür Aktas who headed in a corner: 0-1. Only after 20 minutes of play PSV became dangerous with a shot by Yorbe Vertessen that ended up in the side net. Bruma made the equalizer in the 32nd minute, after a flawless assist from Joey Veerman, by finishing one on one.

The White Lions continued to play football bravely. Gyliano van Velzen even had a great chance and had the ball before typing. He didn’t hit the ball well and that left the score on the scoreboard. In the last minutes of the first half, Ronald Koeman Jr. saved a number of shots from the PSV attackers.

Second half

PSV coach Roger Schmidt was not satisfied with the first half and sent a number of fresh players into the field after the break. Cody Gakpo immediately became menacing, but his shot went over. Telstar remained dangerous on the other side of the field through standard situations. PSV keeper Joël Drommel made a wonderful save on a header from Aktas.

After an hour of play, it was basic debutant Veerman who made the 2-1 in a controlled manner. After the goal of the Volendammer, Telstar’s resistance seemed broken. Nevertheless, Andries Jonker’s team can look back on an excellent performance. The footballers played without fear against the leaders of the Eredivisie. And that with no fewer than nine absentees.
