Braunschweig must continue to tremble: Regensburg almost relegated despite victory

Status: 05/20/2023 4:17 p.m

For SSV Jahn Regensburg, relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga can only theoretically be averted – despite a win at Eintracht Braunschweig.

The Upper Palatinate won on the 33rd and penultimate day in Braunschweig 2-1 (1-1), but that shouldn’t be enough to stay up.

The gap to Arminia Bielefeld in relegation rank 16 is only three points, but the goal difference clearly speaks for East Westphalia. SSV Jahn has been playing in the second division since 2017. The hosts missed the ultimate rescue.

Braunschweig does not use early leadership

Immanuel Pherai (2nd minute) gave Eintracht an early lead, but Regensburg didn’t give up and made it 1-1 through Charalambos Makridis (21st). Prince Osei Owusu (49th) gave Jahn the lead. In the aftermath, Der Jahn lost to Makridis with a yellow-red card (90+4).

Jahn coach Joe Enochs had changed his starting lineup to five positions compared to the 5-1 defeat at home against Hamburger SV. Nevertheless, his team was easily outplayed when it was 0-1, Pherai using a body trick was enough to create space for his shot on goal.

Jahn accepts duels and fights back

But the guests were not discouraged. As the game progressed, Jahn increasingly took on the duels and deservedly equalized.

Regensburg could have taken the lead in the 30th minute, but Owusu’s weak penalty shot was denied by goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann. This was preceded by a foul by Filip Benkovic on Owusu. In the second half he was more accurate.
