At the first Under 18 and 23 Women’s Cup in Saint-Vulbas, the Italians came second behind a record-breaking France, with podiums in combined, precision, individual, pairs and progressive

The international debut is one that leaves its mark. In Saint-Vulbas, in the first edition of the Under 18 and Under 23 Women’s World Cup, Italy won a prestigious silver medal, finishing behind a dominant France from start to finish. The competition, organized by the International Bowls Federation, saw the hosts prevail in all the tests and also set the new Under 23 world record in the relay (51/53) thanks to the Accasto-Jean pair. An evident technical superiority, which however did not prevent the Italians from emerging as the second force of the tournament.

“I would like to congratulate our girls for the commitment, maturity and spirit with which they faced this international experience” declared the president of the Italian Bowls Federation, Roberto Favre. “It was not a given to make their debut in a competition of this level and immediately get on the podium: they demonstrated quality and a great sense of responsibility. This result is the fruit of shared work. Sincere thanks go to the technical commissioner and all the staff for the professionalism and dedication with which they accompany the growth of these athletes. We continue on this path, with balance and confidence, aware that every international experience represents a step forward in the path of our youth sector” concluded Favre.

technical voice

The technical commissioner Enrico Birolo is along the same lines: “It was a wonderful competition with a high technical profile, with many tests one after the other which engaged the girls from both a physical and psychological point of view. I am enthusiastic about the behavior of our girls not only for the performances seen on the pitch, but also for the sense of team and cohesion they demonstrated throughout the competition”.

key results

In terms of results, Italy returns from France with highly valuable placings. Second place in the combined for Alessia Campagnaro and Greta Gamba, same result in the precision shooting for Giada Bertolusso and Alessia Campagnaro. Third step of the podium in the individual with Bertolusso, in the pair with Campagnaro and Erica Candolini and in the progressive shot again with Candolini, already a two-time gold medalist at the World Championships in Mâcon.

final analysis

“For the level of play expressed by France, there was only second place to fight for at that point – underlined Birolo –. And among all the nations present, we were the ones who achieved that placement. This without forgetting that some nations fielded players as part of their respective senior national teams. For us, in addition to the satisfaction of the final result, the experience gained by these girls remains, invaluable in their path of growth and with a view to the future.”

the ranking

The final ranking saw France in first place, Italy in second and Slovenia in third. Also present are Croatia, Montenegro, Türkiye and Australia; Bulgaria, initially registered, withdrew and was replaced by a second French selection. A silver that is worth much more than a medal: it represents a solid starting point for the future of the Italian youth movement.
