Bosschenhoofd football club defeated after traffic drama: ‘Very gloomy moment’

The defeat at VV Devo after the traffic drama in Oud Gastel is enormous. The two children who died in the accident both played in the under-ten team. “It hit like a bomb,” says Michaël Koevoets, youth chairman at the football club.

“We still cannot understand what happened,” Koevoets said on Monday. Members have been talking about the fatal accident all weekend. The youth teams were off this weekend. The senior teams held a minute of silence before the game on Sunday.

All teams of VV Devo and their opponents played with mourning bands. “Something like that is a very gloomy moment,” says Koevoets. “You really don’t want to experience this.”

“They were just having fun playing football.”

The two children who died were enthusiastic football players. “They were nice children. They had been members for a few years. They were just enjoying playing football here.”

Their death has had a major impact on the youth team where they both played. Koevoets: “Wednesday the team comes together. To talk to each other and if they want to do some training.” Victim support is also available. “I think it’s good that the team is doing that together.”

“We cancel all youth matches.”

This weekend the club would like to organize something in memory of the children. “We cancel all youth competitions and we would like to let balloons go into the air for them,” says Koevoets.

The club board will discuss the plans with the families of the victims. “We would like to do something, but for now give the relatives peace of mind. We will consult with them at a later time.”
