Former captain of the Bulgaria national football team and former president of the Bulgarian Football Federation, Borislav Mihailov, has died at the age of 63. The great goalkeeper had been in serious condition since the end of last year, after suffering a stroke, and was never able to recover, despite the care of his family and medical staff. Mihailov was one of the most emblematic figures of the national team, for which he played 102 matches. He was one of the protagonists of the generation who impressed at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. In the quarter-finals against Mexico he became a hero, saving two penalty kicks. He also participated in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, where he played four matches and then won the footballer of the year award in Bulgaria.

Since 2000 he has been a member of the executive committee of the Bulgarian Football Federation, later becoming its vice-president. In 2005 he was elected president of the federation and, with a brief interruption, held this position until 2023. Hristo Stoichkov published a touching message on social media after the tragic news: “What was the hurry in you, Bobi? Why so soon? Our captain, our leader, our friend has left us! The tears don’t stop! You were a great man and a great goalkeeper! It’s so sad! You reunited with Tunio in a better world! Look at us, guide us! I hug you, friend! Respect for your memory.”
