Borger-Odoorn is released 1 million euros for archaeological research in Borger-West on the Koesteeg. The municipality wants to build 190 homes here, but research showed that there are remains from prehistory in the ground. And that means: first digging before building.
The law prescribes that archaeological finds must be secured before the shovel is allowed. The municipality now wants to put the money aside, so that the investigation can start on time and the construction is not delayed.
The parties in the council are happy with that. “In this way we ensure that housing can start energetically, but also think of our heritage,” said John Goeree of D66.
According to the municipality, 1 million euros is a real estimate, based on earlier excavations in a similar area. However, there is still a risk that the research is more expensive, for example if more or larger finds are made than expected.
The construction of the first homes must start in 2026. The archaeological investigation therefore wants the municipality to be carried out at the latest in the summer of 2025, so that housing can then be started in 2026.
