Fans storm the pitch and shoot pyrotechnics into the crowd. The situation in the top second division game in Dresden against Hertha threatens to escalate. A hundred police forces prevent an even greater escalation.
Suddenly you saw fans from the Dresden block rushing towards the visitors’ block. There were scuffles and fireworks flew. It is said that a Hertha fans flag was stolen. It was then set on fire in the Dresden block. Burned down. So very, very unpleasant scenes.
Yes, of course there are things that have no place in football and have no place in the stadium. I believe football should unite. And many people who were here today who just wanted to see a nice football game. The fact that something like this happened is of course extremely unfortunate. I don’t know if what I’m saying now is true, but from me it looked as if Hertha suddenly came down from their block there. And that shouldn’t happen. Otherwise, I don’t think they would have reacted like that.
Anything that has to do with violence does not correspond to our values at Hertha. And you have to and can only apologize to everyone involved that such scenes happen. And when you shoot other people with pyrotechnics, something happens. Then a limit is crossed somewhere that we don’t want to accept.
The referee sends both teams to the dressing room. There is a risk of the game being abandoned. Only after 20 minutes was the decision made. The game continues.
These are beautiful scenes that don’t belong in the stadium. The game has been broken to some extent. At least we were much better off before that.
The sporting side of things this evening is a minor aspect. Hertha wins one to zero and continues to show ambitions for promotion. Dresden is still in the relegation battle.
