The book ‘The remembered soldier’ by the author Anjet Daanje from Wijster is one of the best hundred books of the year. The New York Times writes this. The American newspaper calls the book ‘provocative and enigmatic’.
The remembered soldier takes place after the First World War. It’s about a soldier who has lost his memory. The director of the shelter he is in places an advertisement in the newspaper. Since many women have lost their husbands, comments are pouring in from ladies saying that the soldier is their husband. But eventually a woman comes forward who knows more about the soldier.
“I am surprised at the success in America,” Scheepstra admits. “I expected it in countries like England and France, because they are still very busy with the First World War.”
Will the book also sell well in America? “I don’t know, I don’t have any insight into that yet. I will only be told at the end of the year how sales are going. But I can hardly imagine that this doesn’t do anything,” says Scheepstra.
Daanje has also written the best book of this century, according to 81 reviewers, writers, booksellers and academics in our country. That’s the book The song of stork and dromedary. Scheeptra: “It will be published in twenty languages. The English version will be published next year. Then I’m curious to see how that will turn out. Especially in England, because the story revolves around the Brontë sisters and they are extremely popular there.”
Daanje is already working on a new book. “Fortunately,” says Scheepstra. “But she does it so thoroughly that it takes a while before it appears.”
