Navigation Issues Reported by K2 Airways Boeing 737 F Over Arabian Sea
On the evening of July 7, Flight 5K1732 took off from Sharjah, a city in the United Arab Emirates, en route to Karachi, Pakistan. The Boeing 737-400 BDSF, operated by K2 Airways, faced significant navigational challenges during its journey. The crew reported a “malfunction of the navigation system,” according to the Pakistan Airports Authority, which oversees the country’s air traffic control.
Emergency Protocols Activated
Following the report of the navigational disturbance, air traffic controllers attempted to guide the flight safely. However, the situation deteriorated rapidly. At 21:21 local time in Pakistan, the flight control radar displayed alarming data; the K2 Airways Boeing 737 F, registered as AP-BOI, was seen descending quickly while dramatically altering its course. Flight tracking services corroborated this data, showing a swift loss of altitude, a brief ascent, and then a severe second decline.
Radios and radar contact with the aircraft were lost approximately 155 nautical miles (around 290 kilometers) west of Karachi. In response, the authorities implemented emergency protocols and coordinated search and rescue operations at sea to locate the missing aircraft in the Arabian Sea.
About K2 Airways
K2 Airways is a private cargo airline based in Karachi, founded in 2018. Officially beginning flight operations in late 2024, the airline specializes in national and international air cargo services, along with charter flights. The Boeing 737-400 BDSF is currently their only aircraft, making this incident particularly concerning for the small airline.
The Age and History of Boeing 737 F
The aircraft in question, registered as AP-BOI, is nearly 28 years old. Originally delivered to Aeroflot in 1999, it later flew for Garuda Indonesia. It underwent conversion to a freighter in 2022 under the Bedek Special Freighter program, which is managed by Bedek Aviation Group, a division of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
At the time of its disappearance, five crew members were on board. The age of the aircraft, combined with the sudden navigational issues, raises questions about maintenance protocols and safety procedures.
Ongoing Investigation and Updates
As the investigation unfolds, aviation authorities and agencies are working tirelessly to ascertain the cause of the navigational failure and subsequent disappearance. The focus remains on both the welfare of the crew and the recovery of the aircraft. The incident is noteworthy not only for its dramatic turn of events but also for the implications it holds for airlines and air safety standards in the region.
