Body of toddler found on beach in Spain, possibly son of drowned migrants | Abroad

The lifeless body of a toddler was found on a beach in the Spanish city of Tarragona, in the northeast of the country, on Tuesday morning. It is said to be a boy barely two years old. His body was in an advanced state of decomposition and was reported to have washed ashore.

A beach employee made the gruesome discovery on Tuesday morning around 8 a.m. on the beach of the seaside town of Roda de Berà and informed the police. According to the first information, it would be a two-year-old toddler. The boy’s body was in an advanced state of decomposition and several body parts, including the child’s head, were missing.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Caso, the body had been lying on the beach since last Monday. No bather had reportedly notified the police because everyone thought the corpse was a lost doll. But the mayor of Roda de Berà, Pere Virgili, disputes that. “I would find it very strange if someone saw the body and did not call the authorities,” he said in El País newspaper.

Son of migrant parents

Everything indicates that the toddler washed up on the beach, although it is not known exactly how long he spent in the water. One of the possible avenues of investigation, according to Virgili, is that it concerns a child of migrants who were shipwrecked while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea. For example, the toddler would not have worn a swimsuit, but would have worn a t-shirt and long pants.

The autopsy should now provide more clarity about the exact cause of death. According to the police, there are no reports of missing children of that age in Catalonia.

After the shocking discovery, other objects, including shoes, were found on the beach of Roda de Berà. Also earlier, on June 29, the body of a woman had already washed up on El Miracle beach in Tarragona. She also had no limbs. The Guardia Civil, which is leading the investigation, must now determine whether there is a link between the two incidents.
