Bob: German championships now in Altenberg instead of Winterberg

Status: 25.10.2022 09:55 a.m

Unexpected luck for Altenberg. After the ice channel in Winterberg is full of water, the German Bobsleigh Championships are now taking place in the Eastern Ore Mountains. Local hero Francesco Friedrich should be particularly happy about that.

Local hero Francesco Friedrich can look forward to a home championship in Altenberg. Surprisingly, the German bobsleigh championships will not take place in Winterberg as planned from next week, but have been moved to the Eastern Ore Mountains. This was confirmed by Jens Morgenstern, Managing Director of Wintersport Altenberg (Osterzgebirge) GmbH (WiA), on Tuesday (October 25th, 2022) when asked by “Sport im Osten”. The reason why the original plan had to be changed is that there was too much water on the track in Winterberg.

Koenigssee and Oberhof no alternatives

The SachsenEnergie-Eiskanal in Altenberg was the perfect place to hold this event, there aren’t any other alternatives in Germany anyway. The railway at Königssee, which was badly damaged after the storm disaster, is to be rebuilt from August 2024. Four-seaters are not permitted on the Oberhof ice track.

Starts on November 4th

It all starts in Altenberg on Friday (November 4) with the men’s two-man competition. On Wednesday (November 9th) the women in the two-man bobsleigh will get in, after that the men will determine their German champion in the big sled.
