Open source analysts looked at the images and saw details that the creators had probably overlooked: a recognizable runway, fragments of a village in the distance and the direction of the sun.

It turned out to be the Russian airport near Korsak, in the Pryazovske region. According to Ukrainian media, previously leaked satellite images showed devices used from the base to hunt Ukrainian drones.

The video was intended as tough propaganda about Russian military innovation. It showed how a Yak-52 training aircraft from the Soviet era had been completely modernized by the Russian army.

Yet another PR blunder

It is not the first time that Vladimir Putin’s propaganda machine has been flawed. For example, a headquarters of the Russian mercenary army Wagner was previously unveiled by an enthusiastic reporter.

The reporter on duty visited the location with a TV crew and posted photos online on his social media afterwards. “I arrived in Popasna. Went to the Wagner Group headquarters. They greeted me like family, told me some funny stories,” he posted enthusiastically.

He had only missed one thing: one of the photos showed a street sign in the far corner. The rest is history.

Embarrassing mistake

Journalists from Radio Free Europe Liberty also discovered earlier this year based on a toilet sign where the headquarters of Russia’s secret drone unit Rubicon is located.

Poorly censored images also revealed crucial details, allowing smart minds to discover that the base is located southwest of Moscow, in a well-known conference center southwest of the Russian capital.
