Excelsior played with ten men from the twentieth minute after Stan Henderikx was sent off. Henderikx was close to the opening goal in the opening phase. Goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall was just able to tap his shot against the bar.

FC Twente became stronger in the second half. Robin Pröpper was close to the opening goal and Ricky van Wolfswinkel came across goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel. But in the end it was Van Duinen who decided the game.
