A motorist pulled off a bizarre stunt on Monday evening. The driver drove at high speed along the Gommelsestraat in Biezenmortel. At the railway crossing he crashed into a railway barrier and narrowly missed an oncoming train. The driver then crashed into the warning light, causing a large screw to pierce his window. The driver then fled. The accident caused problems for hours with all railway crossings between Tilburg and Den Bosch.

Various police units have searched the area for the driver, but so far without results. The car was searched by the police.

The man has now returned to the scene of the accident, the police said. “We are going to seriously talk to the man about how all this could have happened,” the spokesperson said.

The driver of the train stopped after the incident and indicated that the train was not hit, but that it was very close. He saw it happen in a flash and was very shocked.

The train, with about a hundred passengers on board, stood still for about an hour and a half at the transition, a ProRail spokeswoman said. As a result, other transitions on the route were also blocked, because safety systems were activated. All disruptions have now been resolved and trains are running according to schedule again around a quarter to ten.

The police are investigating the matter and ProRail comes to the crossing for assistance. A recovery company will come and remove the vehicle.
