Bad start for the Germans at the tennis tournament in Indian Wells: Daniel Altmaier, Tatjana Maria, Jan-Lennard Struff and Ella Seidel failed in the first round.
A long negative series continues for Daniel Altmaier: The 27-year-old suffered his seventh defeat in the seventh game of 2026. At the Masters 1000 tournament, Altmaier had to give up against the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic with a score of 3:6 and 0:1.
Despite an almost two-hour fight, Tatjana Maria also couldn’t stop an unpleasant run: The 4:6, 6:4, 3:6 against the Romanian Sorana Cirstea was the 38-year-old’s fifth first-round defeat at WTA tournaments in a row.
The 35-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff lost his opening game against the Belgian Zizou Bergs 3:6, 4:6. Afterwards, 21-year-old Ella Seidel lost to Russian Anastasia Sakharova in two sets 2:6, 2:6.
Eva Lys canceled: “I’m not ready yet”
Eva Lys had previously canceled the WTA 1000 tournament due to her knee injury and had to postpone her planned comeback. “I really wanted to be there but I’m not ready yet. Tough decision, especially at the last minute, but health always comes first,” Lys wrote on Instagram.
Laura Siegemund and Alexander Zverev are the last Germans left in the tournament.
