Bittencourt is simply not the player he used to be. Especially offensively, he had significantly more influence with his technique, his speed and his way of getting into the final third. You just don’t see it in that form anymore today.
That’s why, from Bremen’s point of view, it is absolutely understandable if they no longer want to extend the contract, even if he would remain at reduced salary. At some point a club has to make this cut, and at Werder it looks like this point will be reached in the summer.
He can certainly continue to be valuable for the dressing room and with his experience, but in terms of sport there is now a lot to be said for ushering in a clear change.
When it comes to the Union Berlin rumor, the question for me is whether Bittencourt can still give a team enough on the pitch to make such a transfer really make sense. The fact that Union generally likes to rely on experienced players makes the rumor understandable, but one can question whether that is really the best solution in the end.

He is welcome to stay with a performance-based contract, but then he will have to accept sitting on the bench and in the stands more often.
But in my opinion it would be better for him if he ended his career well in the second division.

Would be a typical Union transfer at the moment. Even more quantity instead of quality. I hope there’s nothing to it.
