This year, Assen seems to be completely dominated by a hundred years of TT. But with that the TT Festival is actually being short, because the festival is also celebrating an anniversary. The party has been around for fifty years. And that is why there is now busy looking for historical photos.
“Photos of music stages, beautiful people, characters from the TT. Or think of bungee jumping, the fair or perhaps a notorious place that belongs to the TT festival,” festival director Jan Gerbrand Krol sums up some ideas. In addition, he thinks mainly of material from the 70s, 80s and 90s. “The only condition is that the TT Festival is recognizable.”
From the end of 60s, the city center of Assen is always packed in the night before the TT. That is accompanied by riots and heavy riots with the police. Bricks fly through the air, while the ME with the baton attacks the rioters.
To prevent this misery, events were held for the first time in the early 1970s. There will be a fair, there are go -kart races and once a striptease show with German women is held. In the following years, the party increasingly emerges into a festival. In the city, various stages with live music, trial motorcycle drivers entertain the audience, there is food and drink everywhere and the daring to do bungee jumping and / or catapult shooting.
That atmosphere from the 70s to 90s has to return during the anniversary edition of the TT Festival, says Krol. “We are all going to make photo collages. We use them on the website and social media channels. In addition, they come back to the city. We place them in shop windows and in glass containers and they probably also come on the canvases for the construction fences. People can pick up stories in this way.”
